Two experiments examine the perception of virtual-human expressions on a screen and in VR, then compare controller-based expression selection. Raycast selection was the most accurate control method, while labelled thumbstick selection was the fastest and most preferred.

A review of 59 studies connecting virtual-human design with social and emotional experience in VR. It maps work on sociability, fidelity and facial expression, alongside the interaction settings and evaluation methods used to study them, and proposes design guidance for researchers and developers.

A 30-participant study compares face tracking with two thumbstick-based facial control methods during live VR conversations. Face tracking scored higher for usability; labelled thumbstick control was comparable on co-presence and several expressiveness measures, with differences remaining in naturalness and smoothness of expression changes.
