Face Off: Evaluating Virtual Human Expressions and Non-Tracking Control Methods in VR

Two experiments examine the perception of virtual-human expressions on a screen and in VR, then compare controller-based expression selection. Raycast selection was the most accurate control method, while labelled thumbstick selection was the fastest and most preferred.

Making Faces: Evaluating Facial Control Methods in VR for Live Conversations

A 30-participant study compares face tracking with two thumbstick-based facial control methods during live VR conversations. Face tracking scored higher for usability; labelled thumbstick control was comparable on co-presence and several expressiveness measures, with differences remaining in naturalness and smoothness of expression changes.
